Length: 7 hours

Ages 16 and up.
Class description:
Learn all the steps and tools necessary for making an acrylic painting from sketching out a composition to adding a final coat of varnish. Students help create a personalized still life to work from using items of significance they bring from home. If color is your fear – don’t worry. This is primarily a black and white painting project. Students do, however, get to choose one object to transform into color giving their painting a dynamic central focus.
On the first day painting techniques, compositional elements and painting mediums will be covered in a demonstration. Students will learn some of the important tools of the trade. Then they will be shown how to make a gray scale. The grayscale will be used as a reference for creating contrast in their paintings. Then using charcoal and drawing paper students will make some preliminary sketches of the still life. Once they have decided on a composition, students will make a final sketch on their canvas. When the sketch is complete they will begin their painting.
On day two students will be given a simple glazing demonstration. They will use this information when it is time for them to transform the object they have chosen into color. When students have completed their paintings they will be shown how to put a finishing coat of varnish on to seal the painting. Then students will be shown how to properly care for their brushes. In the remaining half hour of class students will have the opportunity to share their finished paintings with the class in a casual setting for discussion and support.
